This November, I’m taking part in Stroke Foundation’s Stride4Stroke to help prevent, treat and beat stroke!

In Australia, one stroke occurs every 9 minutes.

It is one of Australia's biggest killers, killing more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer.

Stroke attacks the brain, the human control centre, changing lives in an instant. The impact of stroke can be devastating for the individual and the family. However, the impact of stroke can be prevented, with research indicating that around 80 percent of strokes are preventable.

I have picked my Stride4Stroke activity goal and I’m ready to go!

Please support my Stride4Stroke challenge with a donation today.

Your donation will help the Stroke Foundation support those affected right now and fund research to help prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery. Thank you.

Why I am taking part in Stride 4 Stroke

Hi everyone,

As a lot of you are aware my dad had a stroke in April 2018. He is the reason I am taking part in Stride 4 Stroke and will continue to every year.

I think it is so important to be aware of the impacts stroke can have on not only the survivor, but their families as well. I believe the biggest challenge for my family has been the acceptance, accepting that dad is different now, accepting that things have changed and that dad prefers to have quiet and watch what he wants instead of being outside working on something all day everyday or reading a book. Accepting that dad doesn't laugh or joke as much as he used to. Two years on and we are still learning. I know for me, the most difficult part is the relationship my kids have with their Poppy.

I can see it's not easy for dad to not be able to do the things he likes or wants to anymore. He loved taking his boat out by himself for a day and fishing by himself, that is something he hasn't been able to do since. Getting on his motorbike and going to the shop by himself to get things. They are things he is unable to do now and it would be incredibly hard to lose your independence just like that.

That is why I am taking part again, it would be great if more could be done in the future for people and their families following a Stroke. If maybe there were signs we could of seen leading up to his Stroke. We are incredibly lucky that Dad is still here, many are not so lucky.
Please make yourselves and your family and friends aware of the signs of someone having a Stroke.
