My target 100 kms

This November, I’m taking part in Stroke Foundation’s Stride4Stroke to help prevent, treat and beat stroke!

In Australia, one stroke occurs every 9 minutes.

It is one of Australia's biggest killers, killing more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer.

Stroke attacks the brain, the human control centre, changing lives in an instant. The impact of stroke can be devastating for the individual and the family. However, the impact of stroke can be prevented, with research indicating that around 80 percent of strokes are preventable.

I have picked my Stride4Stroke activity goal and I’m ready to go!

Please support my Stride4Stroke challenge with a donation today.

Your donation will help the Stroke Foundation support those affected right now and fund research to help prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery. Thank you.

Day 30 - Pilates

Last day today - finished with a short Pilates session:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtBQm4BBsR0
This challenge has been a great incentive to get out and keep active - plus I've really enjoyed keeping a diary. I would like to find a forum to continue doing this as it's a fun way to keep a record of all nice little things and  people you encounter along the way :-)

Day 29 - Archery

Today we completed the Yellow and Blue courses. Jason and Phil were there - Jason was getting his range finder calibrated, so was not competing, but gave me some good tips; positioning of the feet, keeping the target in view not just the pin, and looking at the bubble in the leveller. Steve lengthened the draw distance on my bow which sat much better. All these things improved my shots.
It was an absolutely beautiful day and the countryside around the club was looking spectacular. Butterflies and birds everywhere - and a wallaby hopped slowly across one of the Blue shooting lanes when we were paused for a break.

Day 28 - Swim

8.05am booking for an outdoor lap swim - because it has been 8 months since my last pool visit I set a reduced target of 750m, whereas 1km is my usual distance. In the end I swam 1.25k quite easily.
Funny comment of the day award goes to Steve the inveterate hunter. I asked him if he was enjoying being back in the water. "Not really. It's a bit boring. It would be much more interesting if there were abalone on the bottom of the pool."

Day 26 - Jog with the dog

A 3k run after work. I bumped into Anna and Peter and chatted for a while. Heidi loves Peter and displayed no self respect as she grovelled at his feet! Peter and Anna are very glad to be coming out of lockdown but Anna feels disorientated returning to work after being away for so long.
Heidi also made friends with some strangers on the way so there were several interruptions. It's surprising how many people who love dogs are out walking without one. Heidi was more than happy to oblige and receive their attentions.

Day 25 - Yoga

Nice morning yoga session with my other fav YouTube guru Adrienne. He didn't appear in this video, but Adrienne has an Australian Blue Healer who sometimes wanders onto the set, which is funny because she is based in America:

Day 24 - Walk to meet Rachel

Walked from work to Bryant Reserve for a late lunch/cacth up with Rachel :-)

Day 23 pm - Archery

A quick drive to Lilydale Bowmen's Club after work to do the Blue course with Steve - about 20 outdoor shooting ranges over 2k.

Day 23 am - Arm workout

This morning I did a Fitness Blender workout.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsVjeEx2RNI
It ran for 25 minutes and really targets areas of the arm muscles it is easy to stop using when you sit at a computer all day so well worth it.

Day 18, 19 and 20 - Walking

Only had time for lunch time walks in the latter half of this week - certainly was lovely weather and, as always, it's good to get outside and get some vitamin d and smell a few roses.

Day 16 - Brutal HIIT workout

Actually, I think 'Murderous' would be a better adjective for this HIIT workout:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V9I1KbJvs0
Looking at the comments (extracts included here) I was not the only one.

Day 15 - Fitness Blender

Back to Dan and Kelly who run a great channel called Fitness Blender. Completed these routines:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsVjeEx2RNI 25m
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llRzBwD_TJw 24m
Arms and then a cardio/strength blend.

Day 14 - Bike ride from Seville to Warby

Perfect day for a big ride - about 20 degrees, a breeze and partial cloud cover. Dad and I set our from Seville mid morning. After about 7 or 8 minutes i looked back and no Dad. After waiting a bit I started back and found him with a puncture. We headed back to the car and fixed it. Not having done much bike riding I was worried I would not make it to Warburton but quite comfortably did so. We had a pie for lunch and then headed back. Very proud of my Dad and me being able to do such a big trip - 52.36km. Lots of beautiful sights along the way - notably an adorable baby rabbit, open paddocks and peaceful looking cows, deer, emus, llamas, goats and sheep, creeks which no doubt had trout in them, and lots of kids out riding with their folks. We chatted with a bloke who accurately predicted we would encounter a head wind on the way back. He had moved out with his family from the UK when he was 5, and still lived in Mount Evelyn where he has been all his life. His Dad rode a bike to the age of 84! He was using the same bike his Dad used. My Dad is 78 and has just started using an electric bike to help with the hills and daughters who go too fast, but does an amazing 30km most days.

Day 13 - Failed attempt at a walk

So the plan was to go for a lunch time walk with Cresta and Bronwyn - but we ended up doing one slow lap of a small oval and talking the whole time. All i can say is, if one word equalled one metre we would have covered a lot of ground. I have big plans for tomorrow though so should not matter too much.

Day 12 - Walk to water hole

Took the dog to a water hole to cool off today now that the warm weather has started up. She had a terrific time leaping into the water to retrieve a tennis ball. Very entertaining to watch - she leaps like a goat, with all four feet apparently leaving the ground at the same time and springing into the air - then SPLASH!

Day 11 - PT Session

A great workout at the end of the day with a hilarious Dad joke by Matt:
Did you hear about the French cheese factory that exploded?
No?
It was terrible. De Brie was everywhere.

Day 10 - Run in Blacks Walk

Another run in Blacks Walk today. Included here is a picture of the recently renovated frog pond mentioned on Day 5. You can see why the frogs have temporarily abandoned their favourite water hole in the area until the extension out the back fills up with water.

Day 9 - Run and 'Pointing a Magpie'

Beautiful morning run with Heidi, who had to pause for a good 2 minutes to point at a magpie. Her breed, being a German Wire-haired Pointer, is bred to point at birds and other game and the instinct is strong in Heidi. She stands stock still, maybe lifting a paw, only to turn around and make eye contact to check you are looking at the same thing she is. In this picture you can just see the magpie in front of the park bench in the distance.

Day 7 - Walk

Just a relaxed day with 6km of walking.

Day 6 - PT Live session

Another PT session with workmates - we did four rounds of exercise which is more than our usual 3, so equivalent distance may have been more, but I am using the same stats from Wednesday for want of other information. A great way to finish off the working week, exercise at 4.30pm for half an hour really gives one a boost at the end of the day :-)

Day 5 - Run in Blacks Walk

A quick run with Heidi during the day, with a brief pause for a photo shoot near the recently 'upgraded' frog pond. Not sure how the frogs feel about their recent reno (they've gone a bit quiet) but it certainly looks good. The Walk has a local community of retirees who keep the 3k stretch looking mostly native and lightly manicured - they do a great job!

Day 4 - PT Live session and Run

Thanks to colleague Tracee for converting our online PT session with Matt Fergusson to steps from her fitbit so I can count it towards my S4S goal. Also did a run today to top up the distance and keep my goal on track. Thanks Aunty B and Steve for your sponsorship today!

Day 3 - Field Archery

Today S4S activity took the form of doing the Yellow course at Lilydale Bowmen Field Archery Club. Although the Course was only 1.5km long, energy expended per draw would have added to the effort over and above walking the distance, so I am putting down 3km as a modest guesstimate of equivalent distance.
After some warm up shooting and reminders how to hold this or that part of the body correctly I began grouping my shots quite well. Rabbit pie for dinner anyone?

Day 2 - HIIT Cardio and Kettlebell Workout

Love these guys - Kelly and Daniel put out heaps of free workouts on their site Fitness Blender. You can pretty much find a workout for any amount of time and body/exercise type focus. Today I did this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olHsny-iSA8

Day 1 - Running with Heidi at Koomba Park

A beautiful day for a run - 8 month old Heidi ran well on the lead, returning immediately to my left hand side when commanded, i.e., when bikes were approaching from the opposite direction. She likes to please, and Steve has done a good job training her. We diverted off the main track to look at some bulls and cows, who came up to the fence and looked right back at us. Happy to be off to a good start with 5k under the belt on Day 1 of this challenge :-)
