Introducing the team!

Hi, I'm Dr Tara Walker and I am passionate about running both personally and professionally! I am a research scientist at the Queensland Brain Institute, The University of Queensland and I am working to understand how exercise promotes brain health. It is now well known that running increases the number of new neurons in our brains. The focus of my research is to understand the mechanism/s underlying this phenomenon. The long-term goal of my work is to identify new ways to increase neuron production to replace the brain cells lost following stroke and in Alzheimer's disease.

Hi, I am Dr Odette Leiter and I am a researcher in Dr Tara Walker’s team at the Queensland Brain Institute. We are working with neural stem cells from the hippocampus, a brain area which is important for learning and memory. These brain functions are often impaired in conditions like stroke, neurodegeneration and during normal ageing. Fortunately, exercise can promote the formation of new functional neurons from the neural stem cells, which helps us retain our hippocampal function. This is a good motivation to run a few extra laps this November and support our Stride4Stroke team. Our research mission is to study the molecular signals which boost the production of new neurons after exercise. Understanding these cellular activities can potentially support the recovery of hippocampal function through the generation of new neurons in conditions with impaired learning and memory, such as following stroke or neurodegeneration.

Hi, I am Dr. Matilde Balbi and I am a neuroscientist working at the Queensland Brain Institute. I investigate the intrinsic neuroprotective mechanisms of the brain under pathological conditions such as stroke. My long term goal is to develop strategies to customise recovery at the individual level incorporating Artificial Intelligence to understand the extent of the injury and impairment for each subject.

This November, I’m taking part in Stroke Foundation’s Stride4Stroke to help prevent, treat and beat stroke!

Sadly, 1 in 4 people will have a stroke in their lifetime.

Stroke attacks the brain- the human control centre, changing lives in an instant. The impact of stroke can be devastating for the individual and the family. But stroke’s impact doesn’t need to be this great, research indicates that around 80 percent of strokes are preventable.

So, we need your help to Fight Stroke. It’s going to be a challenge, but it’s nothing compared to those who are impacted by stroke. Please sponsor our team today to support us and together we can Fight Stroke!

Your donation will help the Stroke Foundation support those affected right now and fund research to help prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery. Thank you.
