I’m taking on the challenge of Stride4Stroke and raising funds for Stroke Foundation!

Hi there, I'm taking on the challenge of Stride4Stroke and raising funds for Stroke Foundation to help prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery.

Did you know stroke is one of Australia's biggest killers and there is one stroke every 19 minutes, even though more than 80% of strokes can be prevented?

Stroke doesn't discriminate; it affects anyone, anytime, even unborn babies. It claims more lives than breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Even more distressing, around 600 Australian children experience stroke each year.

Your support can make a significant difference, and I kindly ask you to help me reach my fundraising goal by making a donation. It only takes a minute, and any amount you can give, no matter how large or small, will go a long way in supporting Stroke Foundation's vision of a world free from disability and suffering caused by stroke.

With your generosity, the Stroke Foundation will be able to:

Prevent Stroke: By empowering a greater proportion of adult Australians to recognize the modifiable risk factors for stroke, we can increase their chances of preventing stroke and living healthier lives.

Save Lives: Your support will enable hospitals and healthcare providers across Australia to enhance their capabilities in stroke care and rehabilitation services, ultimately saving more lives.

Enhance Recovery: By reaching out to those affected by stroke, the Stroke Foundation ensures that more Australians can access reliable information, resources, and essential post-stroke support, promoting a better recovery journey for stroke survivors.

Your donation will directly contribute to these critical initiatives, bringing hope, assistance, and improved outcomes to stroke survivors and their families.

Thank you for your support. Your generosity means a lot to me.

My Story

I am the mother of 2 beautiful boys, now aged 12 years, and 9 years old. On 1 September 2019 at 44 years old and otherwise fit and healthy, I took my rottweiller, Ra for a walk I hadn't been able to walk him for a few days following a treatment for the varicose veins in my legs, but on this day the bandages came off so I took Ra to the Dog Park for a run around, on return home I was planning on heading to the Gym to make up for missed work outs, but at the last minute I changed my mind and decided to make myself some lunch to eat at our outdoor table. My boys father was is the backyard with his partner doing some maintenance work. I t started speaking to them and they noticed my speach slurring and left-side drooping, theytook quick action getting me into recovery position on the lounge room floor and calling triple zero for an ambulance. At the hospital the decision was made to perform a Craniotomy ( where a section of the skull is removed to allow the brain more space preventing swelling from causing further damage). I| spent about 1 month at Westmead Public Hospital before being transferred to St Josephs Hospital in Auburn for Inpatient Rehab, on arrival I was unable to stand at all and a hoist had to be used for transfer into wheel chair or commode.  My 45th birthday was celebrated with my family in the patient Dining Room at St Josephs Hospital, as was my youngest son's 5th birthday.Early December 2019, I was tranferred to Westmead Private Hospital  for Cranioplasty (where the removed section of skull) is secured back in place) then back to St Josephs once I was recovered sufficiently. Due to my progress Rehabilitating I was able to get a leave pass to spend Christmas at home with my family in 2019. I had set a goal to Walk my youngest son into his classroom on his very first day of primary school in February 2020, with focus on this goal I worked very hard at my rehabilitation,  achieving the goal on day leave from the hospital and eventually discharging home on 28 February 2020. These days I contonue to dedicate  a significant preportion of  my time to rehabilitation. Fighting for the best possible life and future for myself and my family. I see a physiotherapist weekly andhave a daily exercise program that my physio has prescribed that I complete with my disability support worker or family. I also work hard to support my mental health by spending uality time with friends and loved ones. I am taking part in this challenge, in the hope of inspiring others to take action to improve their health and welbeing with regular movement, and also to raise funds to aid The Stroke Foundation to continue their work to prevent stroke and assist stroke survivors in achieving better outcomes and living more fulfilling lives.
